Problems with tree ring dating dating site techniques

In his Trattato della Pittura (Treatise on Painting), Leonardo da Vinci was the first person to mention that trees form rings annually and that their thickness is determined by the conditions under which they grew. S., Alexander Catlin Twining (1801–1884) suggested in 1833 that patterns among tree rings could be used to synchronize the dendrochronologies of various trees and thereby to reconstruct past climates across entire regions.

During the latter half of the nineteenth century, the scientific study of tree rings and the application of dendrochronology began.

It is produced currently at a fairly constant rate in the upper atmosphere through the action of cosmic radiation on Nitrogen-14.

A well-known study involved bristlecone pine trees in California’s White Mountains, but others have employed oak trees in south Germany and pine trees from Northern Ireland.

Most chronologies only go back a few centuries, but a few give longer ages than the Bible seems to allow, supposedly up to 10,000 years or so. Year-to-year variation in the width of rings records information about the growth conditions in the particular year.

About 21 pounds of Nitrogen is converted each year making about 1/trillion atmospheric carbon atoms radioactive C.

Then an age can be obtained for the organic material.
